DAS Crew

The following is a summary of the objectives and associated decision-making scope delegated to the Development and Strategy (DAS) Crew by participants of the Brassica Collective (via the consent process detailed in our interim decision making process, with the proposal and discussion documented on Loomio).

Goal

The DAS Crew goal is to ensure that the Brassica Collective can implement the RAD housing approach to retrofit and decommodify existing suburban housing so that we, and others, can live in secure, resilient and affordable housing.

Objectives

Ensure the project of “Retrofitting and Decomodifying Housing Collectively and in Solidarity” within the Brassica Collective is moving forward at a sustainable pace by:

  • Communicating a clear strategy that links together all work towards project goals in the Brassica Collective.
  • Developing processes and agreements that shape collective governance and participant experience.
  • Noticing changes in conditions, and making interventions if project priorities need to shift.

Scope of Delegation

Many things that come out of DAS crew are major agreements, and don’t require specific mandate as they are agreed by participants. However, the following items are directly delegated to DAS crew:

  • Determining the rate of growth in the number of participants by controlling the invitation cap and the extent to which the group prioritises promotion and outreach activities.
  • Determining priority order for proposals to be considered by the collective, including determining which items fit into the Assembly each interval
  • Indicating the priority order for work needed to be done by the collective, including assigning important strategic goals to crews, and determining the focus of whole-collective workshops.
  • Develop processes & guidelines for the handbook for areas that are voluntary and don’t need agreement (a somewhat grey area)
  • Develop interim processes for areas that urgently need some approach while an agreement is being worked on, providing the agreement is also worked on in good faith.

Limits on the Scope of Delegation

DAS Crew does not have delegated authority to:

  • Make anyone do any particular work. This isn’t a hierarchy or anyone’s job.
  • Spend money or make any legal/financial commitments.
  • Pressure any individual or crew to work in any particular way
  • Prioritise project outcomes over working and relating in ways congruent with our collective agreements, values and expectations.

Timeline

Given the objectives outlined above, we expect the DAS Crew to be ongoing. Any updates on how the crew is working towards the above objectives will be included in the Crew report backs at each Assembly.
